Artists: Helen Hosking
Helen Hosking's jazz series has grown out of her love and involvement with the music itself. What began well into her artistic career as a tribute to Billie Holiday has evolved into an important body of work, including the bronze and paper castings, ceramics, and collages on exhibit here.
Since childhood, jazz has been her music of choice: "The timing, spaces and emotions expressed in jazz are vital to me. In this series I express visually the excitement and spatial qualities I feel from the music." She adds: "My Jazz Portrait Series has allowed me to honor some of the great legends of jazz."
Featured in this series are renowned musicians Billie Holiday, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, Bessie Smith, Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, and Lester Young.
Ms. Hosking has been a professional studio artist all her adult life. A graduate of Cooper Union in New York City, where she received her BFA in sculpture, she also completed graduate studies in metals and ceramics at New Paltz University. She has been invited to teach numerous workshops throughout the US, and has been exhibited extensively in galleries internationally. Her professional credits and exhibits, beginning with the Roebling Boehm Art Scholarship in 1962, run to multiple pages. She resides in upstate New York.
